Healthy Routines

Small habits, big impact.

Dogs thrive on structure – and a steady daily routine can do wonders for their behaviour, digestion, and overall wellbeing. Here are a few key habits to build into their day:

  • Consistent Mealtimes
Feed at the same times each day (usually morning and evening). It supports digestion and reduces stress.
  • Regular Walks and Play
Physical movement + mental stimulation = a calmer, happier dog. Aim for at least two outings a day, tailored to your dog’s age and breed.
  • Rest and Downtime
Dogs sleep up to 16 hours a day. Give them a quiet space to rest, especially after meals or exercise.
  • Toilet Breaks
Keep these predictable – after meals, after walking, before bed.
  • Check-ins
Take a few minutes daily to check their coat, eyes, ears and energy levels. You’ll catch early signs of discomfort before they become bigger issues

Exercise Needs

Movement matters – but balance is key.

Regular exercise supports your dog’s physical health, behaviour, and even digestion. But every dog’s needs are different depending on their ages, breed, and lifestyle.

How much is enough?

  • Puppies
Short, frequent play sessions. Avoid over-exercising growing joints.
5 minutes per month of age, twice a day, is a good guide.
  • Adults
Most adult dogs need at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity a day – walks, play, or training.
  • Seniors
Still need daily movement, but lower impact. Gentle walks and short play help maintain mobility.

Beyond Walks:

  • Mental stimulation (e.g. scent games, puzzle feeders) reduces boredom
  • Off-lead time in safe spaces helps with confidence and socialisation
  • Mix it up – walks, training, play, and rest all matter

If your dog’s bouncing off the walls or snoozing too much, their routine might need a tweak. A balanced dog is a happier dog.

Hydration Tips

Water matters just as much as food.

Staying hydrated supports everything from digestion to temperature regulation. Dogs don’t always drink enough – especially if they’re on a dry or low-moisture diet – so here’s how to help.

How much water does my dog need?

A healthy dog should drink roughly 50-60ml of water per kg of body weight per day. For a 10kg dog, that’s around 500-600ml.

Easy ways to encourage hydration:

  • Always keep fresh water available in multiple areas of your home
  • Use ceramic or stainless-steel bowls – some dogs dislike the taste of plastic
  • Add a splash of warm water to their food (especially in the colder weather)
  • Use moisture-rich food like Within to support daily intake naturally
  • Offer water after walks and playtime when they’re more likely to drink

Sudden changes in water intake – up or down – can be a sign to speak to your vet.
